Unsecured File Inkscape SVG: Overcoming Challenges in Converting Graphics

When working with graphics from external sources, it's not uncommon to encounter challenges while converting them to a format suitable for use on a website. One such challenge I faced was dealing with an unsecured SVG file in Inkscape. In my case, the issue arose due to the end nodes of the paths being very close together, making new segments imperceptible.

Fortunately, Inkscape's node editor has a feature that ignores already joined nodes and creates a new segment only between the end nodes. I selected all the nodes of each path and used the 'Join selected end nodes with a new segment' option to achieve this. However, many paths appeared closed but were not actually so.

When I tried to load the SVG file using InkscapeMap, it returned a cryptic message stating that the feature was 'not implemented yet.' Detecting the end nodes of each path and joining them one by one proved to be a tedious task. It may seem obvious when working with graphics from external sources, but it's not always straightforward.

To overcome this issue, I used an extension in Inkscape called 'Modify path > Flattern Beziers.' This allowed me to set the level of flatness and keep the appearance of the graphic as close to the original as possible. Since my graphic contained many curves, using this extension was essential.

After conducting extensive research and trial-and-error tests, I discovered some crucial rules that an SVG file must meet to ensure successful conversion. These rules can be found on Launchpad (/inkscape/+question/81736). Following these guidelines helped me successfully convert the SVG map into a HTML image map. Ultimately, my experience highlights the importance of attention to detail and persistence when working with unsecured files in Inkscape.
